Attractions

Throughout the year a variety of cultural events occur.  During the Winter, there are hot dances, hand games and celebrations.  In the Spring, hand games, arrow throwing, Tobacco Society adoptions, powwows and other celebrations.  Summer brings, Sun dances, powwows, reenactments of local history, rodeos, and the Crow Fair.  Fall brings Indian dances and parades.

A time to come to the Crow Reservation in Montana for outdoor activities is from March to late October.  The area has little rainfall and low humidity with plenty of summer sunshine.  In Spring, Winter and Autumn, temperature fluctuations are frequent.  Winter is mostly a time for indoor activities.

Crow Country is surrounded by all types of landscapes.  It is the home of a variety of wildlife, rich in history and is alive with arts and many forms of entertainment.  The Crow Reservation is rich in archaeological sites.  See the points of interest that are unmarked and known to very few.  Entrance into parts of the Crow Reservation are prohibited to non-Crow Tribal members and some are private lands.  Permits and permission are required.  Advance bookings are needed to make the arrangements to enter.

Bighorn Mountains

A part of the Bighorn Mountains, sacred land of the Crows, is on theblack canyon.jpg (45404 bytes) Crow Reservation, it offers lots of wilderness and the opportunity to sightsee, hike, picnic, camp or explore.  Come let us tell you about our legends and traditions of the Bighorns.  The Big Medicine Wheel, located on the scenic byway between Dayton and Lovell, WY.  The Bozeman Trail runs through the Crow Reservation and a segment of the trail is a couple of miles south of WestFork and just west, near the town of Fort Smith, low mounds are all that remains of Fort C.F. Smith.

Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area

The canyon offers many recreational opportunities and is located nearPretty Eagle Point.jpg (44672 bytes) West Fork.  The 525 ft. high Yellowtail Dam backs up the water of Bighorn Lake for 70 miles.  See the amazing Bighorn Canyon, a rugged steep walled canyon hundreds of feet deep carved through the Pryor and Bighorn Mountain ranges, by the eroding forces of the world renowned Bighorn River, Pretty Eagle Point, a vision quest site of Chief Pretty Eagle, Ok-A-Beh, Devils canyon overlook, and the visitor center near Lovell, WY are places to enjoy.  Opportunities for camping, hiking, boating and fishing are here.

Chief Plenty Coups Park & Museum

Located at Pryor, Montana, a Crow Reservation town, features a museum of the Crow people and Plenty Coups, the Chief of all Chiefs, homestead, medicine spring and a developed picnic area.

Pryor Mountains

One of three sacred mountain ranges on the reservation, straddles thePryor-Dryhead valley.jpg (34381 bytes) Montana-Wyoming state line.  Isolated location and elevation make the range a unique environment, with many ecosystems.  Features great scenery; Pryor Gap, ice caves, scenic roads, streams and trails, with undeveloped and developed campsites, picnic grounds, the spectacular, plunging view from the Dryhead Overlook, the Pryor Mountain Nation Wild Horse Range, home to a centuries old herd and the Custer National Forest.  This is also where the Little People live.

Crow Fair

Crow Indian Reservation

The largest of the seven reservations in Montana.  Land designated toCrow-Parade.jpg (19003 bytes) the Crows, located in south-central Montana.  With all different types of land and three mountain ranges, the Bighorn, the Pryor and the Wolf Mountains.  Where culture and traditions are a way of life.  Divided into six districts; Big Horn, Black Lodge, Arrow Creek, Center Lodge, Valley of the Chiefs, and Might Few.  Contains seven towns.

 

St. Xavier and Fort Smith

This area is known as the Gift Away Valley, located in the center of the reservation. The first mission on the Crow Reservation was established in 1887 and the church is still in use, the school is now named Pretty Eagle School.

Crow Agency, Montana

The headquarters of the Crow Tribe, Little Bighorn Battlefield Nationalcrow reservation.jpg (45797 bytes) Monument, Little Big Horn College, a tribal community college, houses an extensive library and the Crow Archives, Crow/Northern Cheyenne Hospital, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Little Big Horn Casino and Crow-owned shops are all a part of Crow Agency.

 

 

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument & Museum

Located by Crow Agency, MT, also known as "Custer's Last Stand," this site features museums exhibits depicting the famous battle.

West Fork

An area filled with breathtaking overlooks, trails to secluded places,hole in the wall.jpg (45146 bytes) archaeological sites, and tremendous touring and camping opportunities.  From diverse landscape to fascinating geologic rock formation to scenic beauty.  The foothills, mountains, tipi rings and other archaeological sites of the area are rich in history.  Grapevine, the Crow knows this place as the Man's Road.  Dryhead and Hole-in-the-Wall are canyon areas that have spectacular postcard type-photos.  These places are located west of the Bighorn River between the Bighorn Mountains.  This region provides ready access to all the resources necessary for survival.  The mountain areas are permit areas on the Crow Reservation.  These places are the places that a few non-members have seen or walked.  These places are enjoyed more on two or more day trips, but they can be made in a day.

Buffalo Bill Historical Center

Located at Cody, WY, this center features the Buffalo Bill Plains Indian Museums.

Crow Country

With the first Ft. Laramie Treaty in 1851 the Crows controlled over 33first crow agency.jpg (37822 bytes) million acres of land in present day Montana and Wyoming.  The white invasion reduced their land, established first Crow Agency east of Livingston, MT and the Crows were now on a reservation.  The U.S. government continued taking their land and the second Crow Agency was created at present day Absarokee, MT.

Custer National Forest 

Features Granite Peak, the highest point in Montana, the Beartooth Scenic Highway starts to wind its way up from Red Lodge.

Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation

One of the seven tribes of Indians in Montana.  Located on the east side of the Crow Reservation.

Billings, MT

The Yellowstone River, Elk River to the Crows, is located in Billings, Montana.  Today medical, cultural, educational, retail and recreational facilities make up the largest city in Montana.  Located near Billings is Pictograph Cave State Park, and Sacrifice Cliff where Crow Warriors blindfolded their horses and rode over the cliff.

Sheridan, WY

Situated on the Bozeman Trail.  King's Saddlery Museum presents a collection of Western memorabilia, an American Indian Artifact display, Bighorn National Forest, Bradford Brinton Memorial at Big Horn WY, historic ranch, art gallery, and Native American displays.
